Once again, Liverpool got a bad result. This time, it is a one all draw with Wigan Athletic at home. They have been thwarted by defensive lynch pin Titus Bramble who scored an “unbelievable” goal (words of Paul Masefield) which broke millions of Liverpool hearts. He was the maestro at the back line of Wigan who is the envy of clubs all across Europe.

Here’s a video tribute to Titus Bramble : World Class Defender.

In all seriousness, it was hard to hold a clear line of thought after the disappointing result. I blame the defeat to these facts.. just so I can sleep tonight. Here is a comparison of the wide/flair players of the “top four” who stared in this round of matches.

  • Chelsea – Joe Cole £6.6 million (2003), Shaun Wright Phillips £21 million (2005)
  • Man Utd – Cristiano Ronaldo £12.2 million (2003), Nani £14 million (2007)
  • Arsenal – Tomáš Rosický £6.8 million clause (2006), Aliaksandr Hleb £11.1 million (2005)
  • Liverpool – Harry Kewell £5 million (2003), Jermaine Pennant £8 million (2006), Yossi Benayoun £5 million (2007)

Notice that Chelsea and Man Utd’s players cost around approx £25-30 million. Arsenal did better with £18 million. Liverpool … take any 2 of the 3 and it is £10-15 million. Players from the other teams also had more experience in the same team as compared to Liverpool’s.

This little study excludes the strikers which aren’t Liverpool’s problem position for the previous game. In that category, Man Utd and Chelsea again spent the most with Liverpool coming 3rd and Arsenal paying the least.

My point is.. it is all about perspective 🙂

That said, give Ryan Babel some time to settle in and we might just see a star player emerging. I also expect Liverpool to get a quality flair/wide player next season, or this January transfer window so that we can kick some ass >.<

I’ll share BBC Football’s Quotes of the Year 2007 which cheered me up a bit 😉
